Camp GRIT is a week-long (M-F), half-day (3 hours) youth summer camp to be held at All Grass Farms. Lil' Farmers camp will start on Monday, June 6th and run through Friday, June 10th from 9 AM to 12 Noon.
The Lil' Farmers Camp is geared towards children 7 – 9 years old. Each of the 5 days will be focused on either a specific animal or nature and ecology. Campers will be able to feed the animals, hold/pet the animals, and learn about each animal's dietary and physical needs. Campers will also learn the role the animals partake in the environment.
Day 1: Chicks
Egg incubation and hatching
How All Grass Farms receives chicks
Brooders and the importance of heat and space as chicks grow
Nutritional needs
Make Camp T-Shirts
Apply screen print to their own shirt
Day 2: Chickens
Campers will visit All Grass Farms' broiler chicken MRC's and laying hens
Differences between the two types of chickens
Physical benefits of chickens living on pasture
Ecological benefits of chickens living on pasture
Nutritional benefits to people
Give some feed to chickens
Collect some eggs for All Grass Farms
Day 3: Cows
Campers will visit All Grass Farms' Beef and Dairy herds
Differences between the two types of cows
Physical benefits of cows living on pasture
Ecological benefits of cows living on pasture
Nutritional benefits to people
Throw some hay into dairy feeder/try to feed by hand
Make butter in a jar
Day 4: Pigs
Campers will visit All Grass Farms' team/herd of pigs
Breed names and differences
Physical benefits of pigs living on pasture
Ecological benefits of pigs living on pasture
Nutritional benefits to people
Feed pigs slop, vegetables, feed
Help move pigs, if possible
Pig craft? Pom-pom pig?
Day 5: Nature Hike/Journal
Create journal using brown paper bags as cover, notebook paper, twine, and colored pencils
Take hike through Brunner Family Forest Preserve
Discuss tree characteristics and identification of common species
Common plant species identification
Exotic and invasive species and their effects on native ecology
Write in journal about observations, sight, smells, sounds. Use journal for leaf rubbings.
