CAMP GRIT is a week-long (M-F), half-day (3 hours) youth summer camp to be held at All Grass Farms.  Wiseacres Day Camp will start on Monday, July 11th and run through Friday, July 15th from 9 AM to 12 Noon.  

 

The Wiseacres Day Camp is geared toward young teens  13-15 years old. Each of the 5 days will be focused on both a specific animal we raise, and an important hands-on survival skill.  Campers will be able to feed the animals, hold/pet the animals, and learn about each animal's dietary and physical needs. Campers will also learn the role the animals partake in the environment.

 

Day 1: Chicks - T-Shirts - First Aid

            Egg incubation and hatching

            How All Grass Farms receives chicks and cares for them

            Nutritional needs

            Create an Individual First-Aid Kit

            Learn about providing first-aid

            Test on first-aid application

            Silk Screen T-shirts

 

Day 2: Chickens and Fire Building

            Campers will visit All Grass Farms' broiler chicken MRC's and laying hens

            Differences between the two types of chickens, collect some eggs

            Fire in nature, kindling & other fire starters

            Wood to use in wet conditions and where to find it

            Fire construction

            Fire safety

      

Day 3: Cows and Knife Forging

            Campers will visit All Grass Farms' Beef and Dairy herds

            Differences between the two types of cows

            Physical and ecological benefits of cows living on pasture

            Nutritional benefits of grass-fed animals to people

            Science of metal forging

            Build a simple forge

            Forge knife from 3/8” rebar

            Knife sharpening and safety

 

Day 4: Pigs and Making a Knife Sheath

            Campers will visit All Grass Farms' team/herd of pigs

            Breed names and differences

            Physical and Ecological benefits of pigs living on pasture

            Nutritional benefits to people

            Feed pigs slop, vegetables, feed

            Introduction to leather working

            Make custom knife sheath           

 

Day 5: Introduction to Regenerative Farming/Nature Hike

            History of farming in the US

            Effects of traditional and industrial farming

            Science of regenerative farming

            Benefits of raising pastured livestock

            Benefits of growing your own food, meat and vegetables

            Science of composting

            Tour All Grass Farms ending with nature hike along the Fox River

            Discuss tree characteristics and identification of common species

            Common plant species identification

            Invasive species and their effects on native ecology

            Native & exotic plant species and their ecological effects

PLEASE NOTE:  REGISTRATION LIMITED TO 20 CHILDREN PER CAMP.  THERE WILL BE A $50 CANCELLATION FEE APPLIED FOR ALL CAMPS THROUGH MAY 15.  NO REFUND OF REGISTRATION FEES AFTER MAY 15.
